People in Your Neighborhood Present The Sunday Circle
Genre: Jazz, Hip-Hop, Improvised Music
Catch The Sunday Circle, a genre-crossing monthly jam session held by local music collective People in Your Neighborhood, live at Top of the Park! People in Your Neighborhood aims to increase access to participation in music making through education and event curation, with a focus on improvised music forms, while paying tribute to the Black American music tradition. Formed by Ann Arbor trumpeter and educator Ingrid Racine in close collaboration with bassist and producer Josef Deas, the collective is a quickly growing community of like-minded musicians working to build bridges between diverse music scenes in southeast Michigan. Listeners will hear the regular house band, featuring Racine, Deas, and keyboardist Keaton Royer, perform completely improvised hip-hop and jazz loops, rousing solos, and anthemic melodies, drawing inspiration from diverse influences like bebop and J Dilla. They will be joined by regular Sunday Circle guest emcees and vocalists, including Ypsilanti hip-hop favorite Tru Klassick and local songbird Koro Kouyate. Attendees are invited to join the Sunday Circle for a jam session focused on supporting one another through listening and responding in real time. Bring an instrument, some lyrics jotted down on a napkin, or just your creativity.
