Genre: Klezmer, Traditional Jewish Music

The Ann Arbor- based ensemble Schmaltz brings their modern klezmer sound to A2SF this summer! The group infuses Jewish traditional music with contemporary flavor, mixing in elements of jazz, Balkan, funk, Latin, and polka music. The group is seen frequently as part of a monthly residency at the North Star Lounge in Ann Arbor, as well as at synagogues, bars, jazz clubs, and other venues all across Southeast Michigan. With deep roots at the University of Michigan, Schmaltz features U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance alumni Michael Gerace on trombone and Jacob Warren on bass, as well as current SMTD protégé Christopher “Chips” Gerace on trumpet. Rounding out the rhythm section are Ann Arbor native Jack Harris on drums, and award-winning pianist, arranger, and composer Seulah Noh. Brought together by SMTD alumnus, bandleader, and Ashkenazi food enthusiast Ryan Schildcrout on saxophones, Schmaltz’s energetic horn-forward sound brings a uniquely refreshing quality to the beloved traditions of klezmer. Don’t miss this performance at Top of the Park!
