Schmaltz
Genre: Klezmer, Traditional Jewish Music
Ann Arbor-based ensemble Schmaltz brings their contemporary klezmer sound back to A2SF! Infusing Jewish traditional music with a modern sensibility, the group mixes in elements of jazz, Balkan, funk, Latin, and polka music. With deep roots at the University of Michigan, Schmaltz features numerous graduates of the School of Music, Theater & Dance, including bandleader and primary composer Ryan Schildcrout (saxophone), Michael Gerace (trombone), Jacob Warren (bass), and current SMTD protégé Christopher Gerace (trumpet). Rounding out the ensemble, the rhythm section includes Ann Arbor native Jack Harris (drums) and award-winning pianist, arranger, and composer Seulah Noh (piano). Their debut album, The Seltzer Man, highlights what fans love: creative compositions, incredible improvisation, and the undeniable energy of a roaring horn section. Schmaltz is thrilled to be returning to A2SF for their second appearance after debuting at the festival last year!
