Genre: Jazz

Don’t miss the swinging grooves and mellow vibes of Josef Deas, opening the AS2F season! A 25 year veteran of the local scene, bassist Josef Deas is now a staple musician in the Detroit jazz legacy. Described as “one of those vital connectors” by fellow local jazz luminary Marcus Elliot, Deas has performed with virtually everyone in Southeast Michigan. Starting at age 14, he began picking up gigs and only one year later, was hired by the University of Michigan School of Music to play upright bass alongside the older students. His commitment to music and personal development is unmatched, carving out a role as a leader among his peers. His relationship with jazz was cultivated by his mentor, the saxophonist Vincent York. By the time Deas exited high school, he’d become one of the most capable and sought after bassists in the state, playing with Michigan greats like Marcus Belgrave, Gary Schunk, Vincent Chandler, Louis Smith, Marcus Elliot, and many others.  In recent years, Deas has expanded his professional career into music writing and production, piano, keyboards, teaching, audio engineering, luthiery, and electronic invention. Catch his unmistakable, always enjoyable jazz live on stage at Top of the Park!
