An arrangement of found image sources from the 16th Century onward, the film looks at the changing representations of the giant star at the center of the solar system. From celestial maps to telescopic photos, the film traces the sun as a natural constant, a mirror of human curiosity, and a radiant symbol of mystery.

An art conservator is torn between preserving a polished ideal and its unvarnished past. Menders invites viewers to see restoration as a dynamic process of making, unmaking, and remaking, through hand-made mixed-media animation.

Centering on a female conservator restoring Velázquez’s Rokeby Venus, the film’s excavating techniques remove varnish, layer paper fragments and torn images to expose imperfections and embrace fragmentation.

The film’s process mirrors its themes—restoration becomes both subject and method, highlighting the tension between original surface and renewed memory.

A yellow and blue day in the life of a little child.

The Sky Was Candy was inspired by a memory from my early childhood, when I found a baby bird that had fallen out of its nest. I took him home to take care of him and to play together. The next day, the bird was dead.

I had been making phenakistoscope-inspired loops for several years when I came up with the idea of using this technique as a narrative device. Ultimately it took me and my team one revolution around the sun to complete this animated short.

After a decade in NYC touring the world as a jazz saxophonist and clarinetist with bandleaders such as Wynton Marsalis and Doc Severinsen, Janelle Haskell decided to make a musical switch to an old love: folk music. Gathering influence from the jazz-inspired harmonies of Joni Mitchell, the finger-picking guitar of James Taylor, and other artists who’ve bridged that delicate gap between folk and jazz, Haskell’s songs draw heavily upon her personal experiences in love, life, and navigating the path from a busy city girl to one living back at home in the open spaces of the Midwest. She recently celebrated the release of her second full-length album titled Dedications & Postcards, which debuted before a sold-out house at Michigan’s own The Rumpus Room last year. At A2SF this summer, she’ll be playing songs from her new album along with a combination of other new and older material.

Join Swing Ann Arbor for a fun and dynamic swing dance lesson! We’ll learn the basics of Lindy Hop, a partnered social dance that comes from the Harlem Renaissance. We’ll dance to jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington.

This lesson will start by grooving in our own bodies before connecting with a partner, then learning some basic rhythms and shapes to get us improvising to music! Students will be encouraged to rotate partners throughout the lesson, as this social dance is best practiced with a big community. All fitness and ability levels are welcome, you don’t need to bring a partner, just some comfy clothes and lightweight shoes you can easily move in.

Bluegrass favorites the RFD Boys are back at Top of the Park! Having formed in 1969, they’re still at it over 50 years later, strumming the same spirited bluegrass that made them an Ann Arbor institution. Longtime fans will remember their performances at Mr. Flood’s Party, LUMS, or the Pretzel Bell, but the Ark has been their AA home since 1985. True stalwarts of the genre, the RFD Boys have graced the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited and shared stages with music industry icons like Bill Monroe and Allison Krauss. They were honored by the Detroit Music Awards during the year of their 50th anniversary and even released their first studio album since 1976, the appropriately titled RFD Boys at 50 – Still Delivering. The band lost Dick Dieterle in 2012, but original members Charlie Roehrig, Willard Spencer, and Paul Shapiro are indeed still delivering, along with David Mosher (since 2012) and Dan Roehrig (since 2018). Experience the toe-tapping bluegrass magic of the RFD Boys for yourself at an A2SF stage this summer.

Genre: Americana, Folk, Country

Renowned Michigan singer/songwriter Rochelle Clark has been captivating audiences throughout the Midwest for years. Clark draws on her roots in folk, Americana, and country to craft a sound entirely her own. Backed by her band, the Familiars, the original Americana group blends raw storytelling with lush, roots-driven soundscapes. Elements of folk, country, and indie rock coexist to create music that feels both deeply personal and widely resonant. Clark’s songs take on a dynamic life in the expert hands of the Familiars, moving seamlessly from intimate, stripped-down moments to full-bodied, harmony-rich arrangements. Their live performances strike a balance between heartfelt introspection and magnetic energy, drawing audiences into a space that feels both reflective and communal. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of that space live at Top of the Park this summer!

You won’t want to miss the unique folk stylings of Ruby John & Nic Gareiss at their first time on an A2SF stage! Gareiss is a singer and step dancer, hailed by the New York Times for his “dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance” and called “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. A resident of Lansing, Michigan, Gareiss received the 2020 Michigan Heritage Award, the state’s highest honor bestowed on traditional artists. They are joined by Anishinaabe fiddler and a member of the Grand Traverse Band, Ruby John. Raised in Michigan’s traditional music community, she grew up immersed in local Irish sessions, contra and square dances, and old-time fiddle jamborees across the state. Her playing spans old-time, Métis, Irish, and French-Canadian styles, reflecting the diversity of the traditions she carries. This special collaboration is sure to be one for the old-time music ages!
