DJ Problematic Black Hottie

Genre: Dancehall, Afrobeat, Funk
A2SF welcomes DJ Problematic Black Hottie, a Detroit-based DJ, tastemaker, personality, and advocate of centering femininity and Blackness. Though now based here in Michigan, she was raised all over the African diaspora, a crucial influence to her eclectic combination of global and local sounds, with a particular focus on feminine music. Dubbed “Detroit nightlife’s empress of girl power” by the Detroit Metro Times, her sets weave in dancehall, afrobeat, funk, reggae, and tropical beats alongside more contemporary techno and rap, an anthropological approach to DJing informed by her background in the study of culture and society. A stylist and visual artist as well as a tastemaker, DJ Problematic Black Hottie’s aesthetic is inspired by Y2K fashion and unapologetic femininity. Don’t miss her DJ set this summer, sure to permeate the crowd with unstoppable vibes and the communal spirit of dance.
The After Dark series is made possible with support from Erin McKean and Steve Sullivan.
